Service jobs in the advanced economies run the gamut from 'McJobs' to strategic consulting but in the developing world and the areas with 'The Bottom Billion' (to use Paul Collier's term) those jobs can be particularly wretched. Given the precarity trap that many are falling into now in the West, we take for granted and criticize the role of the state. The state isn't perfect; it is often flawed and inefficient yet people don't understand that there is a mass of humanity that lives in states that have failed or are failing or are in conflict. The social contract remains an important aspect of day to day life even though we never think of it. I thought the infographics below would be of interest:
